Generate a cover letter

Cover letters are optional for a lot of roles — but when they matter, they matter a lot. TailorFit generates a cover letter from your profile and the job you are applying to, so you are not starting from a blank page.

When to use a cover letter

Cover letters add the most value for roles at smaller companies, roles where you are a non-obvious fit, and any application where you have a specific connection to the company or the hiring manager. For high-volume applications through ATS systems, they often go unread — use your judgement.

Generating a cover letter

From an application detail page, open the Documents section and click "Generate cover letter." TailorFit uses your profile and the job analysis to write a letter that:

  • Opens with why you want this role specifically, not just any role
  • Connects your most relevant experience to what the posting is looking for
  • Closes with a clear, confident ask

If you have not analyzed the job yet, you will be prompted to add the URL or paste the description first. The analysis is what makes the letter feel specific rather than generic.

Cost

Generating a cover letter costs 2 credits.

Reviewing the output

Read it like you are the hiring manager. Check:

  • Does it sound like a person, not a cover letter template?
  • Does it name something specific about the company or role?
  • Is the relevant experience the right experience for this job?

Edit anything that does not sound like you. The goal is a letter that feels personal enough that it would be embarrassing to send it to the wrong company. Generic letters are usually worse than no letter.

Downloading

Download as PDF or DOCX. Most applications that ask for a cover letter accept either format; DOCX is useful if you want to paste the text into a web form.

The cover letter is saved in your Documents section and attached to the application, the same way tailored resumes are.
